Tech Tuesday: Favorite Paper Crafting Tools

It might be a little early yet to do a true Favorite Tools post, as I’ve only been regularly paper crafting for a few months, and most of that has been for my Project Life album. But it might help some of you who are as experienced as I am (which is to say, not very), and it’d probably be nice to look back on this post when I’m a little more seasoned to see how things have changed!

So, discounting the tools I highlighted in last Tuesday’s post, here are some of my favorites for paper crafting. (Disclosure: buying from these links helps me out!)

EK Success Zig 2-Way Chisel Glue Pen
My favorite glue. Strong stuff, and acid free if it matters to your projects.

Fiskars 12-Inch Surecut Deluxe Paper Trimmer
I have an older, smaller version of this trimmer, but I’ll probably replace it with this one when the blades get dull. The wire shows you exactly where the trimmer will cut, which makes it perfect for cutting down Instagrams, or slicing 4×6′s in half for Project Life.

Washi Tape: Wishy Washi Tape, Cute Tape, Freckled Fawn
I am so addicted to washi tape that I couldn’t choose just one type or just one store! Yes, it’s an adhesive and it’s usually easy to take right off in case you need your photo back. But it can also be used to create flower vases out of bottles, redesign a table, and do all sorts of other things with it!

Uchida Corner Punch, Rounded
The fancy little thing that makes all of my photos and journaling cards in my Project Life album nice and rounded. I don’t use ANYTHING ELSE in my arsenal as much as I use this thing.

Silhouette Cameo Electronic Cutting Tool
I used to covet the Cricut, but I’m really glad I got this instead. This machine is definitely an investment for the long term. I got it a few months ago and I’m still learning about all the cool things you can do with it and the Silhouette Studio software. You can buy various shapes for only $0.99 a pop and it’s all digital, so you don’t have to spend money or space on physical cartidges. Aside from cutting normal titles and embellishments for scrapping, I’ve made vinyl stickers, stencils/masks, and even fun boxes for Hugga to fold up and glue together. You can also hook up pens and use it to sketch, which I haven’t even learned how to do yet. It was pricey, but definitely the best craft purchase I think I’ve ever made in my life.

There are some other things I love to use, like punches, embellishments, pens, and ahem, stamps. These may come in a future post, so keep your eyes peeled!

Paper Weekend

This past Saturday was National Scrapbooking Day! I didn’t get much scrapping done outside of my normal Project Life stuff (and I didn’t even get to finish this week’s journaling for it), but I did get a huge happy mail package from my lovely lovely Brooke!

Every time she shows up in my Google Reader, she’s my first read. It’s one of my mondo beyondo dreams to go half on a summer home with her where we could do craft vacations and eventually start a hippie commune together. I squee’ed so hard when I saw her mail on my doorstep, and when I opened the box I nearly died. JUST LOOK AT IT.

All the goodies from Brooke made me want to go start collaging, post-haste! Hopefully I’ll have some photos to share of what I’ve done with the stuff soon. In the meanwhile, I’m trying to put together a package for her that’s at least half as cool as the one she sent.

As for my Project Life book, the past few weeks have been sparse with the photos, so the layouts have only been one page. I don’t even have Week 18 finished. Such a slacker…

I know I need to get back on my SMASH game. I’ve really been aching to do more with scrapping and writing in general, but last week was kind of hectic on the work and family front. Hopefully I’ll get back on track this week.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Music Monday: Rest in Paradise, MCA

It really doesn’t feel right to do Music Monday this week without paying tribute to MCA and saying just a little bit more about how the Beastie Boys’ place in my life. I didn’t even realize how vocal I was about my love for them way back when — many of my friends wrote on my wall as the news of MCA’s passing was going around, telling me that I was someone they thought of or that I was the biggest Beastie Boys fan they knew. Huz and I listened to them all weekend long, and I could still recite all the words to many of their songs, could still whistle MCA’s bassline, could still visualize the more obscure videos like Netty’s Girl. I hadn’t listened to their old shit with any regularity in years but they were still very much a part of my history.

Here’s a lesser known favorite song, which I used to put Squeaky to sleep this weekend.

And a few links on MCA’s legacy:

Y’all don’t understand. I stanned so hard for the Beastie Boys when I was younger and I have long been waiting for my chance to see them live. Once in high school, three of my best friends and I skipped school to go to a Tibetan freedom rally and we saw MCA there and completely geeked out.

It hurts my heart that he’s gone. The growth he’s shown throughout his career is so inspirational; we should all hope to grow as much in our creative endeavors. My thoughts go out to the family he left behind.

Friday Favorites: I’m in Love

A random smattering of things I fell in love with this week:

Woodgrain Washi Tape

I’ve already got an awful addiction to washi tape– it’s a dead simple way to add a cute accent to literally ANYTHING. This woodgrain just kills me. It actually reminds me of pulling veneer off of my desk at home when I was bored.

2 Finger Name Ring

The only nameplate jewelry I DON’T have, although I’m really only good at remembering to wear one ring in particular.

Armed Notebooks

I know this is awful, but I have a thing for weapons. Not actual weapons, but weapon-looking things, I guess. These notebooks are just the best.

Chocolate Covered Bing Cherries

During my first (and only) MFA residency, my mentor brought these to all of our workshop sessions. Now it takes everything I have to not buy these every time we’re at Trader Joe’s. They got me through my pregnancy with Squeaky!

DIY Letterpress Business Cards

Crop Chocolate has listed the Lifestyle Crafts Letterpress Starter Kit a couple of times this week, and I love how it was used on these business cards. The stamp is a great idea too — it makes it much easier to make colorful, one-of-a-kind business cards!
